This substantial New Zealand-made modular wall unit was designed and manufactured by Howard Smith Ltd in the late 1960s to early 1970s, utilising the company’s patented wall-bracket system (NZ Patent No. 153668).
 
The system comprises five components, including a large drop-down cabinet with record storage, a drop-down drinks / storage cabinet with mirrored back and glass shelf, a desk / bureau cabinet with two drawers, a large open shelf, and a slender display shelf. All elements are designed to work cohesively within an engineered two-part steel mounting system, allowing the cabinetry to be securely fixed to wall studs while remaining fully removable and reconfigurable.
 
Originally purchased new by the original owners in Wellington, New Zealand, in the late 1960s to early 1970s, the system later moved with them to Australia and has remained in private ownership. This clear provenance is reflected in the outstanding condition of the piece today.
 
A rare and highly versatile modular wall system that functions equally well as storage, display, or a combined work and media setup, and suits both mid-century and contemporary interiors.
